On the last Friday of February, the movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Lii was released in the United States. And grossed over $10 million worldwide. This revenue goes along with a negative general reception from movie critics. Some reviews say that it’s predecessor, the live-action Street Fighter movie, was better than The Legend of Chun-Li. According to TV Guide’s Jeremy Wheeler, said that “fight scenes were don’t have good balance between martial arts and FX-laden punches.”

The film which starred Smallville actress Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li follows the story of Chun-Li’s life from her childhood. She was narrating, on openning, how her father was kidnapped by M. Bison and his gangs (who are apparently kidnapping rich people to have them give him their properties). And then the movie shows Chun-Li all grown up and an accomplished pianist. She then received a scroll and sought the help of a woman to translate it. To cut the story short, Chun-Li journeys to find her father.

But some fans of the Street Fighter video games weren’t happy about the film. Some of them complains that the movie was far from the video game. On the other hand, there were also people saying that you can’t really expect a video game-turned-movie to be exactly like that of the one you’re used to playing everyday.

For me, the movie may have a bad side but it should also have something to offer their target demographics. The casting is fine but the plot is not that great, I think. And though fighting scenes were not exactly like that of the game, they are still exciting to watch.

Now, a lesson that movie makers should learn is that video games turned into movies do not come in handy with followers. The fans of the games have their expectations and the movie should at least meet half of these expectations. Otherwise, you’ll have handfuls of disgruntled and unsatisfied moviegoers.

Anyway, there are some rumors that the RPG War Craft is going to have a movie adaptation this year. Let’s just hope they get it right if these rumors are true.
