As expected, the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ won most of the awards at the recently concluded Oscars. This rags-to-riches story set in the Mumbai slums netted eight Oscars including the best director for director Danny Boyle and of course the best picture award goes to the movie. A few weeks before the said awards show, the movie netted a number of awards from a number of award-giving bodies and this was a testament to how good the movie is. With these awards in the bag for the movie, this has made the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ as the favorite to win the best picture and majority of the awards, and the movie didn’t disappoint. As expected, the movie rolled to major awards.

But even though the small movie was the big one for the night, other stars made some mark too. For example, Sean Penn won for his performance as Harvey Milk and he won as best actor. When he received the best actor award, he then talked about gay rights and condemning the anti-gay protesters near the Oscar site and the passage of Proposition 8 to ban same-sex marriage. Also, Kate Winslet which was considered as the front runner even though there’s Meryl Streep took home the award for best actress. She won her award after getting five nominations in the past. She won for her performance in the movie ‘The Reader’. She was honored for best supporting actress for her role in this movie by the Golden Globes. In a way, the roles that made her win are the roles in the movie that she has played all her professional career. Her performance at ‘Revolutionary Road’ was also commendable. For the best supporting actress category, the golden statue went to Penelope Cruz for her performance in the ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’.
