High School Musical banks $42M

The entry of Disney, ‘High School Musical 3: Senior Year’ topped the box office for this week and leads the class with an outstanding $42 million. The last week’s monster on top of the box office, ‘Saw V’ had to settle for second place this week as the movie took home $30.5 million. The estimates of the movie were supplied by their studios. The sequel to the hit Disney ‘High School Musical’ had a record opening for a song and dance flick and the record submitted by the movie easily beat the record that was set by ‘Mamma Mia’ that was set last summer. The ‘Mamma Mia’ movie submitted $27.8 million.
With the earnings of the Disney movie and ‘Saw’, the earnings of Hollywood for the week have soared. If the earnings of the top 12 movies are to be combined, the movies delivered $120.5 million and up by 41 percent from last week’s figures. The combination of the G-rated and the R-rated movies in the market proved profitable for business. The ‘Saw’ movie actually pulled almost the same amount of money from last week but the movie was the first one to fail to finish at number one, after the original saw debuted in third place in 2004. In the end those who love their horror movies was simply outnumbered by the young fans of ‘High School Musical’. The movie tends to market to the female and the family market out there. It was also observed that the series is also aging up and also bringing in the male audience. The movie is a hit as well in other countries as this pulled $40 million in 9 other countries like Great Britain, Germany and Spain. Other releases for the week include Pride and Glory, Changeling and Max Payne.
