Coen’s brother’s latest Number 1
It’s another hit for the Coen brothers this week as their movie topped the other releases for the week. In fact this was Joel and Ethan Coen’s biggest opening to date and their movie banked $19.4 million in ticket sales for the movie ‘Burn After Reading’. Then entry of the movie and its subsequent good showing at the box office was welcome news and development in the industry as it snapped the seven-week attendance slide of many movies at theaters.
One reason why the movie is a hit is because of the big names included in the picture. The movie stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovich. The earnings of the movie eclipsed the earlier movie of the Coen brothers, the 2004 comedy flick ‘The Ladykillers’.
The ‘Burn After Reading’ is a nice follow-up as well to their last year’s effort, ‘No Country for Old Men’. That movie won four Academy Awards and eventually grossed more than $73 million at the box office. The president of the Focus Features, Jack Foley said that the good showing of the movie at the box office was due to their Oscar credentials and on the strength of the star-studded cast lead by Brad Pitt. This movie isn’t the only one that finished strong in the box office for this week as other releases also submitted good results. The family drama ‘The Family Preys’ scored big at the box office as well and this movie was written and directed by Tyler Perry. This movie about two families from different social classes debuted at number 2 and banked $18 million. Perry’s films have a good history at the box office. Five of the six films of the filmmaker debuted either at No 1 or No 2. The film that opened at Number 3 was Overture’s ‘Righteous Kill’ and the movie opened with a high $16.5 million.
