Tropic Thunder finally tops Batman
Batman finally relinquishes the top spot at the box office. The Dream Works/Paramount comedy that starred four big names in the industry toppled the caped crusader and took home $26 million. The comedy which was the subject of protests just last week starred Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black and Tom Cruise. The Batman movie still pulled significant amount of money at the box office and scored $16.8 million. This pushed the total of the movie to $471.5 million and has already passed the original ‘Star Wars’ movie which has $461 million. With the Batman’s movie earning, it is now considered as the No.2 in the all-time domestic listing of highest grossing movies next only to Titanic.

But if the inflation will be taken into account, the movie still trails ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Titanic’ in actual tickets sold. In order to equal the figures of ‘Star Wars’; Batman needs to ring $1.2 billion at the box office. But according to its studio, the movie is expected to top $530 million domestically. The Batman flick kept another ‘Star Wars’ movie at bay, the animated tale ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars’.
The Ben Stiller movie was actually the third R-rated comedy to do solid business at the box office. The other two R-rated movies were the ‘Pineapple Express’ and the ‘Step Brothers’. By normal standards, R-rated movies usually open in the $20 to $30 million range and tend to have a longer shelf life.
The movie was directed and was co-written by Ben Stiller that starred Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black as the pampered actors who found themselves in a real combat situation. Tom Cruise also starred in the movie as the bald and the egomaniacal studio boss. The movie has then raised its total to $37 million since the movie’s opening on Wednesday.
